EDUCATION / THE STONE, THE ARTIST, AND THE LION
This 13-minute short documentary follows the work of master stonemason Phil Hawk, as he creates a new "habitat" for the iconic Penn State Nittany Lion.
One of the most photographed sites in Pennsylvania, the Penn State Class of 1940 class gift provided for the iconic Nittany Lion statue. The Penn State Class of 2012 class gift provided an upgraded “habitat” for the Lion that included extensive stonework.
The film includes a student present for the original sculpture work in the 1940's, the 2012 class gift chair, Penn State’s emeritus archivist, and design architects. The film follows the stone artists for 6 months as they gather stone, cut, carve, and assemble this monumental work of stone.
Partial funding from the Penn State Alumni Association. A storyshop film.
